As our knowledge of learning and child development has expanded, the general “scientific” and “behavioral” view has become increasingly fragmented. We have divided development into categories that are useful for study, assessment, and professional specialization. We speak of cognitive development, language development, motor development, social development, emotional development, sensory processing, executive function, adaptive behavior, and countless other human developmental domains as isolated categories. Studies regarding each category can contribute something to our understanding at some level, but children do not develop or function in isolated categories. They develop as whole persons.
The interconnectedness of learning and development has profound implications for how we assess, nurture, teach, and treat children.
The child does not experience themselves, or a world, divided into developmental domains. When an infant reaches toward their parent’s face, smiles in response to a familiar voice, becomes distressed when separated from a caregiver, or delights in seeing their toy, multiple developmental systems are operating simultaneously. Perception, attention, memory, movement, emotion, motivation, communication, and social understanding are woven together in a single lived experience. What professionals separate into categories exists in the child as an integrated and continuously interacting whole.
Integrated Developmental Domains: A Different Way of Understanding Development
Rather than viewing learning and development as a collection of largely independent processes, the Integrated Developmental Domains Model proposes that development emerges from reciprocal interactions both within and between developmental systems. Each developmental domain contains multiple interacting components, and each domain is itself continuously influencing, and being influenced by, every other domain. Development is best understood not as the growth of separate functions and abilities but as the increasing organization and integration of a dynamic interactive system.
We need to shift our priorities away from training isolated skills and focus instead on mediating meaningful relationships between developmental domains, between opportunities, mediation, content, process, skills, understanding and applications, assessments and parenting, assessments and treatment, and assessments and therapy. The question is no longer simply instructing a child to communicate, solve problems, regulate emotions, or participate socially. The more important question becomes how these capacities influence one another and how their interactions contribute to the development of the whole child.
Nested Systems
Urie Bronfenbrenner wrote that we need to look beyond the individual child and consider the larger systems within which their development unfolds. He described development as occurring within nested ecological systems that range from immediate family relationships to schools, communities, cultural beliefs, social institutions and historical circumstances. He shifted attention away from isolated traits and toward relationships and interactions. Children cannot be understood apart from the environments within which they live.
Parallel Assessment and Parallel Development suggest that just as children are embedded within larger ecological systems, the child’s developmental domains are themselves nested systems.
Language development depends upon perception, memory, attention, social interaction, emotional security, and motor planning. Social development depends upon communication, emotional regulation, sensory processing, cognitive understanding and shared experiences. Cognitive development depends upon opportunities for exploration, emotional safety, communication, language, movement, and social engagement. Every domain contributes to and depends upon the functioning of other domains. Development therefore consists of systems embedded within systems, each influencing and organizing the others.
Development Emerges Through Connection and Interaction
Dynamic Systems Theory
Dynamic Systems Theory views development as an emergent process arising from countless interactions among and between biological, environmental, social, emotional, communicational, and cognitive influences. Unlike traditional developmental theories that emphasize a predetermined sequence of milestones unfolding according to an internal biological timetable, dynamic systems theories emphasize that higher development emerges through interactions between nature, environment, nurture, social interaction, and learning. New abilities arise when multiple systems become sufficiently organized to support new forms of functioning.
Walking, for human toddlers, does not suddenly occur just because a motor milestone has been reached. Walking emerges through the convergence of health, muscle strength, balance, sensory feedback, motivation, curiosity, environmental opportunities, and social encouragement. The achievement belongs not to a single domain but to the entire developmental system.
Language emerges not merely from innate linguistic mechanisms but from interpersonal relationships, shared attention, memory, perception, emotional engagement, motivation and shared meanings and intentions. Emotional regulation emerges not only from temperament but from social experiences, communication, cognitive understanding and supportive relationships. What we call development is the continual organization and reorganization of interactive systems.
Integrated Developmental Domains in Everyday Life
As a young child is engaged in building a block tower, they coordinate their visual perception with motor movements, create a plan or a goal, maintain attention, remember previous attempts, regulate frustration when the tower collapses, share the experience with others, and remain motivated to continue and do it again.
What appears to be a simple play activity involves sensory, motor, emotional, social, communicative and cognitive systems working together.
The same is true when a child learns to ride a bicycle, participate in a conversation, solve a problem, read a story, take a test, comfort a friend or play a game. Development never occurs exclusively within a single domain. Every meaningful activity engages multiple domains simultaneously.
Jean Ayres and the Integration of the Sensory Domain
Jean Ayres called her framework Sensory Integration Theory. She observed that successful learning, behavior, and participation depend on the brain’s capacity to integrate multiple sensory inputs into a coherent whole. Before a child can effectively communicate, learn, reason, or interact with others, the sensory system itself must function as an organized and integrated system.
Within the sensory domain, no sensory system operates in isolation. Vision, hearing, touch, proprioception, vestibular processing, taste, and smell continually interact and support one another.
A child catching a ball must visually track the ball while simultaneously integrating vestibular information about their body position, proprioceptive information about arm and hand movement, and tactile feedback from the hands upon contact. A child learning to read must integrate visual perception of letters with auditory processing of speech sounds while maintaining postural stability while sitting through vestibular and proprioceptive systems.
Ayres distinguished between the sensory domain and the sensorimotor domain. The sensory domain is fundamentally receptive. It involves detecting, registering, organizing, and interpreting incoming sensory information. The sensorimotor domain involves the functional application of those sensations through movement. Sensory processing provides the foundational input. Sensorimotor behavior represents the functional output of that foundation.
Ayres demonstrated that integration within the sensory domain supports integration across developmental domains. When sensory information is effectively integrated, children can devote more of their resources to learning, interacting, thinking, and adapting. According to Ayres, sensory integration serves as a bridge connecting sensory functioning to every other aspect of development.

Vygotsky and the Integration of Thought and Language
Lev Vygotsky explored the integration of two developmental domains that he believed initially emerge separately: thought and language. His work demonstrated that higher levels of human cognition arise not from the development of either domain alone, but from their progressive integration into a unified system.
According to Vygotsky, in early development, infants display forms of communication that are largely social and emotional, while their problem-solving abilities remain primarily sensory and motor in nature. These developmental streams initially follow separate paths. During the toddler years, thought and language begin to merge. At this developmental junction, language becomes a core tool for thinking. As the child’s thinking becomes increasingly organized through language, their language is increasingly elevated. Communication and cognition are functioning as a single integrated system.
Vygotsky emphasized that abilities which first emerge between people are eventually internalized within the individual. The integration of thought and language simultaneously strengthens the development of more complex and more abstract thinking, learning, and social understanding.
The Social Origins of Integrated Development
Colwyn Trevarthen’s studies of infant development demonstrated that long before language emerges, infants participate in what he called intersubjectivity, the sharing of attention, emotion, intention, and experience with another person.
The infant and caregiver engage in reciprocal exchanges that resemble interactive conversations long before words exist. A smile evokes a smile. A gesture or a vocalization elicits a response. Sometimes initiated by the adult, sometimes initiated by the infant. A shared gaze becomes a shared experience. Through these interpersonal interactions, the infant begins to discover that minds can connect.
Learning, empathy, and development begin with reciprocal human interactions and interpersonal relationships. Intersubjectivity becomes one of the primary mechanisms through which developmental domains become integrated.
Mediated Learning and the Integration of Mind
Reuven Feuerstein proposed that human learning is profoundly influenced by mediation. Children do not simply absorb information from the environment. Caring adults help organize experiences, direct attention, highlight relationships, create meaning, and support understanding.
Through Mediated Learning Experience, the child gradually develops greater awareness, flexibility, organization, and self-direction. For Feuerstein, intelligence is not a fixed trait. It is a dynamic and modifiable system that can be strengthened through meaningful interactions with skilled mediators.
This perspective is especially important for children with developmental delays and disabilities. Through mediation, perceptions become linked with concepts, actions become linked with intentions and feelings, and motivations become linked with understanding. Skills become increasingly integrated as the child learns how experiences, thinking, and relationships relate to one another and have personal meaning.
From Separate Skills to Integrated Functioning
Development is fundamentally relational, ecological, dynamic and integrated. The child is neither a collection of isolated abilities nor the sum of independent developmental domains. The child is more than their parts.
Integrated Developmental Domains represents more than an abstract theoretical position. It represents a way of seeing and of knowing children and ourselves in deeper, more genuine, and more helpful ways. It moves beyond fragmented assessments, superficial interactions, and isolated interventions toward a deeper appreciation of the individual as a whole person whose development emerges from relationships among and between systems.
A Shared Philosophy of Integration
Human development proceeds through the organization and integration of developmental systems rather than through the independent growth of isolated skills or isolated domains. Separate functions become increasingly interconnected, and this integration produces higher levels of understanding and functioning.
Parallel Assessment and Parallel Development extend this principle across all developmental domains. Sensory processing, movement, emotion, motivation, communication, social interaction, cognition, and self-regulation continually influence one another in reciprocal and dynamic ways. Difficulties in one area affect functioning in others. Growth in one domain creates opportunities for growth throughout the system.
This perspective rejects reductionist approaches that attempt to explain development by examining and treating isolated parts. Children do not develop as collections of separate faculties or abilities. They develop as integrated human beings whose developmental domains continually interact, organize and support one another.
The Indivisible Child
Development is not the accumulation of separate competencies but the increasing integration of interpersonal relationships, mind, body, emotion, thinking, communication, values and purpose into a more coherent and adaptable human being. The child who develops successfully does not simply acquire more skills. The child becomes increasingly able to coordinate developmental domains into a unified and flexible system capable of participating, wondering, exploring, playing, imagining, learning, planning, problem-solving, adapting and contributing.
Integrated Developmental Domains remind us that children are not collections of parts. They are living, developing integrated systems. To understand the child, we must understand those interactions. To support development, we must strengthen integrated interactions. This principle of integrated developmental domains is a core foundation of Parallel Assessment, Parallel Development, Synontogeny, and the broader Organizing Minds framework.
